Jay Shah Announces INR 125 Crore Award For T20 World Cup Champions India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that it will grant a bonus of INR 125 crore (approximately USD 15 million) to the Indian team that triumphed in the T20 World Cup. This declaration was made by board secretary Jay Shah in a post on X, following India’s exhilarating victory over South Africa by seven runs in the final held in Barbados.

Jay Shah, BCCI secretary posted a tweet on X saying “I am pleased to announce prize money of INR 125 Crores for Team India for winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, The team has showcased exceptional talent, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. The International Cricket Council (ICC) had previously declared a cash reward of USD 2.45 million for the champions of this World Cup, along with an extra $31,154 for each match won by every team, excluding the semi-finals and finals. This cash prize represents the largest amount ever awarded in the history of the men’s T20 World Cup, marking an increase of USD 850,000 from the USD 1.6 million that England received in 2022.

South Africa, as the runners-up, earned USD 1.28 million, an increase from USD 800,000 in 2022. Meanwhile, the semi-finalists, Afghanistan and England, each received USD 787,500, which is an increase from USD 400,000 in the previous year.

In summary, every team is set to benefit from an increase in prize and participation funds from this tournament compared to previous years. The total prize pool has more than doubled, rising from USD 5.6 million in 2022 to USD 11.25 million this year, resulting in enhanced awards for all 20 teams involved.

Team India Expected To Fly Out Of Barbados On Tuesday Evening

The Indian team is scheduled to return home on a charter flight on Tuesday evening, following the announcement by Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who indicated that the airport is anticipated to resume operations within the “next 6 to 12 hours,” thereby concluding the closure caused by a category 4 hurricane.

Team India, along with its support staff, several BCCI officials, and the families of the players, has been unable to leave Barbados for the last two days as a result of Hurricane Beryl, which struck the island on Sunday evening. On Monday, Barbados and the surrounding islands experienced severe winds and storms that posed a threat to life. The nation, which has a population nearing 300,000, has been under lockdown since Sunday evening.

“I don’t want to speak in advance of it, but I have literally been in touch with the airport personnel and they’re doing their last checks now and we want to resume normal operations as a matter of urgency, there are a number of people who were due to leave last night late or today or tomorrow morning. And we want to make sure that we can facilitate those persons, so I would anticipate that within the next six to 12 hours the airport will be open.” Mottley told PTI.

The Indian contingent is expected to leave Bridgetown at 6pm local time and land in Delhi on Wednesday at 7.45pm IST, according to a source. The players will be later felicitated by prime minister Narendra Modi but the schedule of that event has not yet been finalised.
The window for the Indian team to leave Bridgetown is a narrow one as Mottley revealed “we have another hurricane coming on Wednesday”.
