Suryakumar Yadav, the T20I captain of the India national cricket team, has been ruled out of the opening round of the Duleep Trophy 2024, commencing on September 5. The right-handed batter suffered a hand injury while playing for Mumbai in the Buchi Babu tournament 2024.
Suryakumar did not bat in the second innings of the match against TNCA XI, which was held last week, as he sustained a hand injury while fielding on the day 3. At that time, the management of the Mumbai team stated that the decision was a precautionary measure, considering his involvement in the season-opening Duleep Trophy.
Suryakumar Yadav recently also showed enthusiasm for a return to Test cricket. After not participating in any first-class cricket for more than a year, Suryakumar offered himself for the pre-season Buchi Babu tournament to prepare for red-ball cricket. India is scheduled to play 10 tests in the upcoming five months, beginning with a two-match series against Bangladesh starting September 19 in Chennai.
Suryakumar, who has only played one Test match so far, had been selected in the India C squad. The India C team will be led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, and they will be facing off against Shreyas Iyer’s India D squad in Anantapur. Meanwhile, India A and India B will be competing against each other in the other opening-round fixture at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Duleep Trophy Updates

Recently, fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik were also sidelined from the first round of the Duleep Trophy due to illness. Additionally, Ravindra Jadeja has been withdrawn, although the BCCI did not provide a reason for his absence. Navdeep Saini and Gaurav Yadav will take the places of Siraj and Malik in the India B and C squads, respectively.
In the meantime, the NCA has also confirmed that Nitish Kumar Reddy is in good health now, after following a groin injury that caused him to pull out of India’s T20I team for the series against Zimbabwe in July.
